In its Byzantine predecessor, the haloed Emperor Justinian reigned over this Eucharist scene in a secular swipe of Christian iconography for his own political power. In this remake, the same figure proffers the sugary version of the host to the spiritually hungry viewer/consumer who in turn has the choice to pledge his obedience through a new and improved covenant.
